It is surprising that even after multiple reminders, only some of you have participated in the project work. To remind you again, each of you have to submit at least 10 datasets (per student), failing which the data will be inconsequential for further work and your class project.

I am setting a deadline of Oct 30 for data submission, after which no extensions will be provided and students failing to submit requisite data contribution will be excluded from the course project.

Kindly go through the article titled "Enhancing renewable energy in India's Electricity Mix: A Paradigm Shift", recently published in TerraGreen by TERI..

The assignment involves following sections:

1. Discuss the authors' recommendations on increasing the fraction of RET in India's energy requirements. (Max length: 1 A4 sheet)

2. Do you agree or disagree with Authors' recommendations or any other aspect mentioned in the article? Can you suggest further recommendations to support or refute the authors' take on RET in India?  (Max length: 1 A4 sheet)

The due date is Friday, Oct 17.

M Tech: Missing of extra class on Friday, Sep 26

It is really unfortunate that none of the students showed up for the extra class scheduled for Sep 26. The class was scheduled and informed to everyone 1 day in advance and also the morning of Sep 26. I received intimation only from Spring batch about their inability to attend the class.

I waited in class for 20 minutes. The extra classes are for your benefit only and such apathy on your part will only delay the course coverage. As such, I am assuming the current topic (planned for the class) finished.

M Tech: Attendance till Sept 15

You can find your subject wise attendance, compiled till Sep 15, here.

Be advised that attendance below 75% will affect your ability to participate in the end-term examination.

All the students are required to attend the lecture by Prof. B. Bhattacharya on "Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells" on Sat, Sep 20.

The venue and timing has already been mentioned to you by Dr. Prabhas.

You are also required to submit a 1-page (~ 400 words) report consisting of what you liked about the talk/content, what you learnt, what portion of talk is relevant/similar to something covered in RET course and what other information could have been included by the Speaker to make the talk more interesting.

The submission deadline is Mon, Sep 22.

The assignments submitted by the following students for Water & Wastewater Treatment course are verbatim copies of each other.

1) Saifullah
2) Asim
3) Lukman
4) Shabir
5) Shishir
6) Umar

All of these students need to submit a signed written statement explaining this and also a written pledge that they will not commit this mistake again during their M Tech duration at Sharda University.

M Tech: RET: Practice Questions

We discussed these questions in today's class. Try them today, we will discuss them in more details on Friday, Sep 12.

1. Q:

Country
Area (km2)

Energy Consumption (MWh/year)
United States
9,826,675
  4
3,886,400,000

344,700,000

n(a) Determine which countries need to cover Maximum and minimum surface area to achieve total energy requirements from PV. Assume the PV efficiency is 15%.
n

(b) If a PV of 270 Wp is to be installed, what would be the most ideal location in term of maximum output.

2. Q:

nFamily Smith is interested in buying a solar energy system. After some research on the Internet they have found two different systems that they are considering. System A is a PV system based on multicrystalline silicon solar cells and system B is a PV system based on amorphous silicon solar cells.
nSystem A: The efficiency of the multicrystalline silicon module amounts to 15%. The dimensions of the solar module are 0.5m by 1.0m. Each module has an output of 75 Wp. The modules cost €60 each.
nSystem B: The amorphous silicon solar modules have an efficiency of 6%. The dimensions of the solar modules amount to 0.5m by 1.0m. The output of each module is 30 Wp. The modules cost €20 each. The advantage of the amorphous silicon solar modules is that they perform better on cloudy days in which there is no direct sunlight. Installed in the Netherlands, this system gives, on a yearly basis, 10% more output per installed Wp than the multicrystalline silicon modules.
nBoth systems are grid-connected using a 900 Wp inverter. The total price of the inverter, the cables, the installation and other costs amounts to €1000. The solar modules are to be installed on a shed. The roof of the shed can only support 10 m² of solar modules.
nIn the Netherlands a PV system having multicrystalline silicon module generates on average 850 Wh per Wp in one year. The performance of both types of modules is guaranteed for 20 years. The price of electricity from the grid is €0.23/kWh. Assume that all the power produced by the PV system is completely consumed by the Smith family.

na) How much (peak) power (in Wp) can be installed for system A given the peak power of the inverter and the area available on the shed? How about System B?
nb) What is the price of a kWh of electricity (in €/kWh) generated by system A? System B?
nc) Family Smith is eligible for a municipal subsidy for sustainable energy that amounts to 15% of the initial costs of the PV system. Using this subsidy, how many years does system A need to be operational to earn the own investment back (assume that the electricity price of €0.23/kWh does not change)?  Calculate the same for system B.

M Tech: Projects

As course projects, M Tech students will work in 2 groups of 5-6 people and model the water quality of River Yamuna using QUAL2k. Limit your work to BOD of river water.

Group 1: Yamuna water quality in Delhi (use this for data: http://www.ipublishing.co.in/ijesarticles/thirteen/articles/volthree/EIJES31143.pdf)
Use 2012 data to predict the quality for 2015 and 2020, incorporating population increase.

Group 2: Yamuna water quality between Delhi and Agra (use this for data: http://www.cpcb.nic.in/newitems/11.pdf)

Use 2005 data to predict the quality for 2015 and 2020, incorporating population increase. You may also use the current census data.

Feel free to discuss it further with me.

You are expected to make presentations and submit final report around April 15-20.

You may find this link very useful for this exercise: http://www.usbr.gov/gp/ecao/wgfp_eis/stream_water_quality_modeling_report.pdf
